Most Popular Interior Design Styles

Is your home decor in need of some direction? With so many design styles to choose from, settling on one can prove to be difficult for many homeowners. Interior design expert Marina Colella explains the elements indicative of some of the most popular design styles today, as well as simple tips and tricks for incorporating each style into your home.

Bohemian. Do you live a carefree lifestyle and follow your heart as often as you can? The Bohemian decorating style may be right for you, as it is merely a hodge-podge of all of your favorite things. Globally inspired elements are wildly popular in this design style, including everything from glamorous chandeliers to hand-crafted area rugs and woven baskets. When it comes to seating, the Bohemian style is all about comfort. Think floor pillows, plush blankets, and pillows. There’s a lot of freedom within Boho design – really, anything goes as long as you’re pleased with the decorative elements you use!

Coastal. Love the feel of a beach house? You can incorporate those relaxing elements into your own home design! Also known as the Hamptons style, Coastal design has characteristics of your favorite seaside home. Features include plenty of natural light, soft and oceanic color palettes, and plush furnishings that are whitewashed or beige. Wooden elements are also prevalent throughout the design style. When it comes to accessorizing, think paintings of your favorite lighthouse, family vacation photos, and beachy souvenirs. Include whatever it is about the beach that relaxes you in your Coastal-inspired home.

Modern. The modern style of design is very broad, but it typically involves elements like clean, crisp lines and simple color palettes with lots of neutrals. Common materials used in the modern decorating style include metal, glass, and steel, or hybrids of each. If you want to incorporate modern design into your home, think minimally! Each element you choose for your home, from furniture to wall hangings, accents, and lighting should have an air of simplicity to them. Aim for sleek and stylish – avoid cramped and cluttered.

Industrial. This decorating style is inspired by lofty environments like warehouses and urban apartments. Industrial design has an unfinished charm to it with exposed elements like brick, wood, and sometimes even ductwork. Other standard features found throughout industrial design include high ceilings, metal fixtures, and functional furnishings that often serve more than one purpose. Industrial accessories usually have a neutral color scheme or a textured appearance of wood or metal. When done right, an industrial design can be iconic.

Contemporary. Modern design is often confused with contemporary. While the two styles are similar, contemporary design is based on the latter half of the 20th Century. Unlike the straight, crisp lines used in modern decor, contemporary design plays with curvy lines and softened shapes. Popular colors in the contemporary style include brown, taupe, and beige, with pops of color used in accessories like artwork and window treatments. Contemporary materials tend to be natural, like light-colored woods, paired with stainless steel or chrome fixtures. Similarly, natural fabrics like silk, wool, and cotton are also found throughout the contemporary style of design.
