Most Popular Home Decor Styles: How to Decorate

With the start of the new year comes the desire for new beginnings. If you’re like countless others out there, you have an itch to remodel! Fortunately, you don’t have to do a complete overhaul to give your home an instant refresh. Whether you’re looking to inject a bit more personality into a space or you’re sick and tired of looking at your white walls, interior designer Marina Colella has created a guide for some of the most Googled home styles in 2019. To kick off 2020, get your creative juices flowing with Marina’s tips and tricks for working the most popular home styles into your own designs.

Farmhouse. To capture the essence of farmhouse Americana in your home, a neutral color on the walls is ideal. This allows the accents you play with to blend more easily. Incorporate colors like navy and rust within your decor, and don’t forget metallics like silver and bronze. These hues and finishes help add dimension into an otherwise neutral space. When it comes to texture in the farmhouse style, think natural. From fabrics like cotton and burlap to the textures of reclaimed wood and galvanized steel, there are plenty of options for everything from window treatments to furnishings, light fixtures, and wallhangings.

Colonial. This style borrows motifs that were commonly found in the homes of the wealthy during Colonial times. Picture dining rooms with crystal place settings, iconic rustic centerpieces in living rooms, and grand entryways fit for the likes of royalty. While this might sound unachievable in your own home, there are a few simple ways you can capture the colonial style in your decor. If you don’t have the largest entryway, you can play with colonial essence by incorporating polished hardwood floors and simplified walls into the area. Throughout the rest of your home, use neutral color schemes in lighter shades and wainscoting in your kitchen, dining, and living rooms.

Cape Cod. Whether you’re from New England, you covet the style of New England homes or both; you can showcase your love with Cape Cod decor. This style is all about comfort. When it comes to capturing the light and airy feel of an afternoon on the cape, neutral beige, pastel colors, and white-washed furnishings work wonders. Furnishings should be mostly comprised of wood in rooms like the kitchen and dining areas, but in main living spaces, it’s all about the plush. Loveseats and chairs should be overstuffed, beckoning you to curl up with a good book and lounge. Plus, now you have a use for all of the beach-themed accessories you’ve collected from vacations past!

Spanish. Spanish style homes are a popular architectural choice, but cultural elements have also seeped their way into home decor. From clay accent tiles to arched doorways, the Spanish style of decorating is becoming increasingly popular. Think exposed wood beams, Mexican textiles, and pottery accents. Come for the eclectic look this style allows you to achieve, stay for the warm and inviting color palette filled with vibrant, natural shades of red, yellow, blue, green, and brown.

Art Deco. While art deco is heavily influenced by French, Egyptian, and Mediterranean cultures, it also features plenty of geometric shapes and patterns. Vibrant colors are also indicative of this style, so don’t be afraid to play with your favorites on accent walls or through the use of accessories like window treatments or throw rugs. Other accessories that work well in art deco design include glass elements, shiny fabrics, and mirrors.
