How to Hang Curtains

Hanging curtains seems like one of those things that should be intuitive and easy, but for those who have attempted to do the job before, you know how frustrating it can be. Between taking measurements and mounting the rod, you can run into problems big and small. If you have struggled with hanging curtains correctly in the past or are uncertain about how to do it now, the following tips will help you hang your curtains like a design pro.

Measure your window
Accurately measuring your window is the first step to hanging curtains in any room. First, measure the width of your window. Then, choose a curtain rod that extends at least 8 to 12 inches past your window on either side. This way, you can push your curtains all the way over and allow light to enter your room without restriction.

The window’s width also helps you choose the correct sized curtains. A curtain panel should be 1.5 to 2 times the width of the window it is covering. This ensures that your windows will be adequately covered when the curtains are closed and will look stylishly gathered to the side when open.

You also need to measure where you are placing the curtain rod. You should aim to place your rod anywhere between 4 to 6 inches above your window frame. Anything closer can make the placement look awkward, and the room will appear shorter than it is.

Choose the right length
To determine your curtains’ length, measure the distance between where you plan to mount your rod and the floor. Like placing the rod too close to the window, choosing curtains that are too small will shorten your wall and make the room appear smaller. You may elect to go for a length that grazes the floor, hovers just above the floor, or pools slightly on the ground. All are acceptable options.

Letting light in
The material of your curtains is a key aspect of choosing the right curtain for your rooms. If you are picking curtains for your bedroom, you want to select a material that properly blocks out light so that you won’t be disturbed by sunlight in the morning. Go for heavier curtains that provide the necessary privacy and filter light. However, light and airy curtains are an excellent choice for living rooms or rooms that don’t receive a significant amount of sunlight. Additionally, you may want to opt for heavier curtains in the winter when your home is more drafty, and light curtains to let the breeze in during the warmer months.

Mount your rod
Once you have taken all the proper measurements and picked out your curtains, you’re ready to mount your curtain rod and hang your curtains. Use a level to ensure that your curtains are even. Make pencil marks so you know where to place your brackets and use a drill to create holes for your bracket screws. Using a screwdriver, mount the brackets to the wall. Then, place your curtains on the rod. Finish the job by setting the rod in the secure brackets.
