4 Design Trends Inspired by Nature

One of the most prominent trends in home design this year is including elements inspired by nature. For many of us, this might be because nature evokes the feeling of quiet contentment we hope to recreate in our own homes. Or it could be because we love the warm, inviting mood set by natural tones and humble materials like wood and rattan. Whatever the reason, it’s time to welcome the outdoors in with open arms, and we have just the tips you need to do it.

Here are four design trends inspired by nature:

Live Edge Wood
Furniture made with live edge wood preserves nature’s charm by using slabs of wood that still have their natural, raw edge. While the material is most commonly used to create tables and benches, it could undoubtedly be crafted into shelves, mantles, and headboards. Not only does using live edge wood add more texture to your space, but the organic shapes, grains, and knots also bring an original character that cannot be replicated.

Animal Prints
Take a walk on the wild side and incorporate animal prints. Keep it subtle and swap your throw blankets and pillow covers to a mix of the many intricate patterns, or go bold and create an accent wall covered in a striking animal print paper. Just remember, you want your home to be well-balanced and welcoming. An easy way to do this is to select animal prints in muted, neutral colors like tan, beige, white, gray, and black. You won’t have to worry about animal print going out of style either. Vogue has deemed it the “latest classic trend.”

Colors from the Environment
When you spend time outdoors, you notice how many different colors are all around you. Instead of making your home a neutral palace, incorporate colors from nature. Cool colors like blue and green work well as foundational colors. Use them on your walls and in the fabrics of your larger furniture. Warm colors like red and orange are known to capture the eye, so you can use them when you want to create a focal point.

Nature Inspired Accents
Another way to stir up the feelings you find in nature is by bringing in decorative elements inspired by the outdoors themselves. Lay down an area rug made of woven jute or rattan. Invest in furniture made of light, natural woods. Hang long-leaved plants by the window. There are countless natural materials, colors, and patterns that help bring the outside in.

And there you have it, four design trends that help make your home just as light and uplifting as nature itself. If you’re unsure of how to incorporate these elements into your home, The Colella Design team is here to help.
