Take Risks with These Six Home Décor Ideas

They say, “Home is where the heart is,” so why not decorate with accessories you love?! Like that intriguing piece of art you can’t stop looking at or that polka dot loveseat you don’t want to leave behind. Certain decorative elements may not match the rest of your home, but they’ll capture your personality and create talking points during parties. From DIY displays to painted patterns, no element is too bold. Take a risk and make your space unique with these six home décor ideas.

DIY Bookcase. Do you have a lot of books? Pick up wood from your local home improvement store, call a friend, and start building your own bookcase. There are plenty of simple building instructions on the web that can guide you along the process. Let your kids leave a painted handprint on the finished piece or paint the bookcase with a more sophisticated design. Don’t be afraid to use a can of spray paint, either—just be sure to spray outside.

Funky Furniture. Do you often walk through flea markets and pass up on antique furniture because it doesn’t go with your current set? Next time you spot something you like, think outside the box. Those brown, decorative chairs may complement your simple, white dining room table. Or a patterned accent chair might work in your family room. These types of furniture are inviting to your guests and make them want to take a seat.

Homemade Plant Holder. They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Before throwing away your child’s Tonka truck, place some greenery in it. Have an old tea tin? Put a small plant in it, and you can add color and decoration to your kitchen windowsill. What about all the lightbulbs you’ve thrown away? Turn old bulbs upside down, secure them to a wall, and put flowers in them. Old tea kettles, colanders, and even boots can provide a fun home for plants as well.

Patterns. You don’t need to visit the zoo to see zebra stripes. Get wild and mix patterns in your bathroom. Choose one color scheme, like black and white, and then you can pick a design that fits that theme. For this example, you could paint zebra stripes on one of your walls. Add a diamond pattern to the bathroom floor and circles behind your bathtub. The mix of designs will give you a lot to look at without straining your eyes. If the wall print is too much, subtly incorporate the design through bath mats, shower curtains, and towels.

Plants. Don’t be afraid to bring outdoor life into your living space. Plants not only add beauty to your home but also clean the air, so they’re beneficial for your whole well-being. Place a colorful, tropical kalanchoe plant in your kitchen; these succulents survive in bright and warm conditions. Rubber plants can remove airborne bacteria, so it’s best to keep one of these in any room you spend a lot of time in, like your living room. Hang an arrowhead plant in your bathroom since they thrive on humidity.

Scenic Ceiling. Remember the glow-in-the-dark stars you had on your ceiling as a child? Channel that nostalgia and elevate the idea by adding a surprise to the ceiling in your master bedroom. Have a professional artist paint flowers, a geometric pattern, or something that resembles marble up there so you can have something luxurious to look at when you wake up in the morning.

Your home should be a representation of you and your style. Consider the joy certain items and looks bring to you and decorate your living space with them. If you need help finding ways to take risks with your home decor, contact Marina Colella for a design consultation.
